B-Roll Content Ideas for Authors

A tool in any social media toolkit is something we like to call “B-Roll footage”. This is footage of an object or a person that adds visual interest or context to your video with no sound. You’ve seen this used in all forms of media, but mostly in documentary films where you have one person talking over another clip.

We use the same premise for social media videos. We will take a clip of a B-roll video and either add a voice over to it, post a client testimonial, or even just a meaningful quote. All in all, having a good stockpile of B-roll footage will help you create more content.

Feeling a little stuck on what to film for your book B-roll? Here are just a few ideas to use as a jumping-off point.

Generic:

  • Book outside on a table with the trees blowing in the background

  • Placing a book on the coffee table

  • Book on a table and lighting a candle

  • Someone reading the book (could hide face for faceless)

  • Putting a book on the bookshelf

  • Running your hand over books and then pulling out a book from the bookshelf

  • Book next to a cup of tea and stirring it

  • Pages flipping in the wind

  • Book in a garden or around a garden

  • Your finger tapping on the book

  • Tossing a book on a bed or couch

Triller:

  • Close-Up of a Finger Tapping the Book Cover

  • Gloved Hand Placing the Book on a Shelf

  • Shadows Moving Over the Book Cover (I actually did a video on this, see it here)

  • Slow Zoom on a Mysterious Object Next to the Book

  • Pages Flipping Fast in the Wind

Romance:

  • Hands Slowly Turning a Page with a Highlighted Love Quote

  • Two Mugs Clinking Together Next to the Book

Fantasy:

  • Pages Flipping on Their Own with a Mysterious Glow Overlay

  • A Candle Beside the Book with Wisps of Smoke Rising

  • Close-Up of Gold Foil on the Cover Catching the Light

  • Feathers or leaves falling on top of your book

Historical:

  • Book on a Wooden Table with a Faded Photograph Beside It

  • Lay a handwritten note next to the book

  • Blow a little dirt or dust off the cover

  • Opening up a box to find the book in it.

See you in the next chapter!
